On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the National Customs Museum is hosting the association Bal d'Antan – A step into History

In period costumes, in the emblematic courtyard of the Hôtel des Douanes, the dancers will revive the elegance of balls from the Second Empire through several demonstrations in the courtyard of the Hôtel des Douanes. This animation invites young and old to immerse themselves in the festive and refined atmosphere of the 19th century.

About Bal d'Antan – A step into history
The association Bal d'Antan - A step into history brings back to life the magic of grand balls, from the 18th century to the Belle Époque. Throughout the year, we offer historical dance classes (waltzes, quadrilles, polkas, counterdances...), workshops for making period costumes and costume events in exceptional places. Accessible to all, our association brings together passionate and curious in a friendly atmosphere to offer a real living immersion at the heart of our heritage.

The National Customs Museum is located in the former Hotel des Fermes du ROI de Bordeaux. This jewel of customs heritage is also an emblematic building of 18th century Bordeaux. It was built between 1735 and 1738 specifically to house the General Farm, a private company that collected taxes under the Ancien Régime on behalf of the king. The building was the gateway for goods transported by boats and landed in the hall to be controlled by the farm clerks, ancestors of the customs officers. The building is organized around a rectangular courtyard that received the goods before and after customs clearance. The classical facade designed by Jacques Gabriel is remarkable for the balance of its proportions. The pediments were made by sculptor Jacques Verberckt, who also designed the fountain against the wall of the inner courtyard.
