Église Saint-Pierre
770 Rue Félix Dehau, 59830 Bouvines, France
In 1878, the mayor of Bouvines decided to rebuild the parish church, considered too dilapidated and too small. Construction began in 1880 and was completed in 1886; the stained-glass windows were only made from 1889; the church was consecrated in 1910\. The architect Auguste Normant was inspired by medieval architecture and designed it as a holy chapel, containing no relics, but serving as a showcase for stained glass windows. The church, composed of a nave without side aisles separated from the chancel by a transept, is entirely covered with vaults on crossed ogives. The stained-glass windows were made by Charles and Emmanuel Champigneulle, after cartoons by Pierre Fritel: they illustrate the battle of Bouvines, where Philippe-Auguste was victorious of the coalition.
