The existence of the church of Saint Peter is mentioned as early as 1026 in an act of Richard II, but the building, preserved today, cannot go back to the years 1070-1080\. The present church has, no doubt, succeeded an older building. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Touques was an important port, located not far from the ducal residence of Bonneville-sur-Touques, which probably explains the importance of the building. The lantern tower has the particularity of being octagonal, whereas usually it is square. The church has a restored Romanesque nave, dating from around 1100 years, reduced to two bays in the 17th century. The transept frame retains capitals with magnificent decoration: quadrupeds, snakes, flat heads. The arcades of the crusade, decorated with bird’s beaks, support an octagonal lantern tower erected after 1125\. The choir, off-centered from the nave, is covered with a barrel vault supported by a double arch, a rare occurrence in Normandy in the Romanesque period. Disused
