The latest project of the DnA agency, led by Xu Tiantian, concerns the reconversion of the Huangyan stone quarries. This project envisages the gradual reactivation of 20,000 m² of disused spaces. The exhibition presents the development of these rock galleries, studies on the ecosystem that has developed there, and the dialogue established with the local community.
For the past decade, Xu Tiantian has been recognized for its many infrastructure revitalization projects in rural China. Approaching architecture as a lever for territorial development, it relies on local traditions and know-how to revitalize the economy of the territories. The transformation of an old stone quarry into a public space in 2019 marked an important turning point in his work. There are now more than 3,000 abandoned quarries in Jinyun County alone, a heritage with great potential in a Chinese hinterland in search of renewal after the rural exodus.
In the continuity of this first intervention, the project to redevelop the Huangyan stone quarries in the city of Taizhou, plans to restore these spaces to the community while gradually reactivating 20,000 m² of disused areas. The exhibition «Vides de pierre» is dedicated to this new project of the agency DnA, founded by Xu Tiantian in 2004. It highlights the layout of these galleries, the studies on the ecosystem that formed there. over time, as well as ongoing dialogue with the local community throughout the project.
This exhibition, visible from April 25 to October 27, 2024, also allows to reflect on the future of this industrial heritage at the local level, while no less than 1,400 quarries have been identified in Gironde in recent years.
