Henri Godefroy (1837–1913) is the first photographer commissioned by the Commission du Vieux Paris in 1898 and the founder, in the early 1900s, of a uniquely inventive artist-run museum dedicated to his passion: Old Paris. A daring artist, a master of photomontage, and at times a pioneer of humanist photography, Henri Godefroy was also capable of transforming a commissioned architectural photograph into a genre scene of remarkable composition.
The 24 prints on display, remarkable for their visual richness and beauty, were made possible by the restoration and digitization of Godefroy’s negatives in 2026 by the Department for the Preservation of Photographic Heritage (D3P). They are part of a collection of 60 very large-format negatives created by the photographer on glass plates in the late 19th century and exhibit exceptional sharpness and definition.
An exhibition by the Historical Library of the City of Paris, in collaboration with the DEVE (Department of Green Spaces and the Environment) and the VIF Festival in Vincennes.
