Seit den Anfängen der Fotografie hat sie in wissenschaftlichen Kreisen großes Interesse geweckt. Zahlreiche Studien haben den frühen Versuchen einiger Wissenschaftler gewidmet, dieses Medium in ihre Forschungsbemühungen zu integrieren. Die Möglichkeiten der Fotografie wurden in einer Vielzahl von Bereichen (Astronomie, Medizin, Archäologie, Physik, Naturwissenschaften, Ethnologie, Anthropologie, Architektur usw.) und für eine Vielzahl von Anwendungen erforscht. (experimentelle Vorrichtungen, Dokumentations- oder Konservierungswerkzeuge, Kommunikations-, Lehr- oder Forschungsinstrumente). So spielte die Fotografie von den 1830er bis in die 1960er Jahre eine immer größere Rolle in der modernen Wissenschaftsfabrik und lieferte neue Ressourcen und Werkzeuge, die dann in den naturwissenschaftlichen, physischen und sozialen Wissenschaften weit verbreitet wurden.

From the very beginning of photography, it has aroused great interest in scientific circles. Many studies have been devoted to the early attempts made by some scholars to integrate this medium into their research efforts. The possibilities offered by photography were then explored in a wide variety of fields (astronomy, medicine, archaeology, physics, natural sciences, ethnology, anthropology, architecture etc.) and for a plurality of uses (experimental devices, documentary or conservation tools, communication, teaching or research valorisation instruments). Thus, from the 1830s to the 1960s, photography played an increasing role in the making of modern sciences, offering new resources and tools that will be widely used in natural sciences, both physical and social.

Fin dagli inizi della fotografia, ha suscitato un vivo interesse negli ambienti scientifici. Numerosi studi sono stati dedicati ai primi tentativi fatti da alcuni scienziati di integrare questo mezzo nei loro processi di ricerca. Le possibilità offerte dalla fotografia sono state esplorate in una grande varietà di campi (astronomia, medicina, archeologia, fisica, scienze naturali, etnologia, antropologia, architettura, ecc.) e per una pluralità di usi (dispositivi sperimentali, strumenti documentari o di conservazione, strumenti di comunicazione, d'insegnamento o di valorizzazione della ricerca). Così, dagli anni '30 agli anni '60, la fotografia ha svolto un ruolo crescente nella fabbricazione delle scienze moderne, offrendo nuove risorse e strumenti che saranno ampiamente declinati nelle scienze naturali, fisiche e sociali.

Dès les débuts de la photographie, celle-ci a suscité un vif intérêt dans les milieux scientifiques. De nombreuses études ont été consacrées aux tentatives précoces effectuées par certains savants pour intégrer ce médium à leurs démarches de recherche. Les possibilités offertes par la photographie ont alors été explorées dans une grande variété de domaines (astronomie, médecine, archéologie, physique, sciences naturelles, ethnologie, anthropologie, architecture etc.) et pour une pluralité d’usages (dispositifs expérimentaux, outils documentaires ou de conservation, instruments de communication, d’enseignement ou de valorisation de la recherche). Ainsi, des années 1830 aux années 1960, la photographie a joué un rôle croissant dans la fabrique des sciences modernes, offrant de nouvelles ressources et outils qui seront déclinés largement dans les sciences naturelles, physiques comme sociales.

Desde sus inicios, la fotografía ha suscitado un gran interés en los círculos científicos. Numerosos estudios han sido dedicados a los primeros intentos realizados por algunos científicos para integrar este medio en sus procesos de investigación. Las posibilidades ofrecidas por la fotografía fueron exploradas en una gran variedad de campos (astronomía, medicina, arqueología, física, ciencias naturales, etnología, antropología, arquitectura, etc.) y para una pluralidad de usos (dispositivos experimentales, herramientas documentales o de conservación, instrumentos de comunicación, de enseñanza o de valorización de la investigación). Así, desde los años 1830 hasta los años 1960, la fotografía desempeñó un papel cada vez más importante en la fabricación de las ciencias modernas, ofreciendo nuevos recursos y herramientas que serán ampliamente utilizados en las ciencias naturales, físicas y sociales.
