Violeta Parra (1917–1967), a Chilean musician, singer, poet and artist, began collecting her country’s musical traditions in the 1950s. Driven by a desire to ensure this music was heard and recognised, she travelled through various regions of Chile, equipped with her tape recorder, to meet singers. In 1963, whilst living in Geneva, she donated four magnetic tapes to the Geneva Museum of Ethnography (MEG), containing a selection of her recordings, musical demonstrations and a few of her own compositions. Drawing on this audio collection, recently catalogued by the MEG, this evening offers an opportunity to rediscover Violeta Parra’s contribution to the history of Chile’s musical traditions.
Actress and singer Francisca Gavilán plays Violeta Parra in this fictionalised adaptation of the book of the same name by her son, Ángel Parra.
In collaboration with FILMAR en América Latina.
