And if history was not only in castles…
Big stones are often celebrated:
castles, abbeys, places of power.
But what about these more modest, discreet places,
who, however, carried the life, work and daily life of entire generations?
On the occasion of the European Heritage days,
We invite you to discover Maison Espalanusse,
a béarnais closed whose oldest written trace dates back to 1344.
Here, no splendor, but a deeply human story:
that of a rural world, shaped by hard work, ingenuity and long time.
A heritage often forgotten,
at the same time, he has contributed significantly to building our territories and societies.
Throughout the tour, we offer you:
to browse the entire domain,
share known historical elements,
and to open our eyes to the hypotheses surrounding its older origins.
Because Maison Espalanusse is told as much by the archives as by what it suggests:
in its walls, its openings, its traces…
so many clues of a past still to be explored.
This restoration project is an invitation:
👉 restoring its place to rural heritage
👉 recognize the value of these places of life
👉 and transmit a memory too often left out
Come and discover another way to read the story.
👉 Guided tours throughout the day (2h slots: 10.12h, 14.16h, 16.18h)
👉 Exchanges around the project and old know-how

The Espalanusse house is an authentic Béarnais enclosure first inventoried in 1385 by the monks of the neighbouring abbey on behalf of the lord of the time, the famous Gaston Phoebus, prince of the Pyrenees. Maison Espalanusse is one of 240 stone houses inventoried at the time. The farm and its 10-hectare estate go through 30 years of abandonment until the acquisition of the latter by the Nanglard family who dreams of making it a place of exploration and experimentation. At home Espalanusse we talk, renovation of the old building with old techniques, of garden in permaculture, agroforestry, natural beekeeping and ethological, we will also talk about the «culture» of the water with lows or swell. We will talk about resilience, food self-sufficiency, respect for life and biodiversity.
