Wie kann man den ehrlichen Händler vom Schmuggler unterscheiden? Vom Ende des Mittelalters bis in die Gegenwart erforscht dieses Panel die grauen Zonen des Handels im Mittelmeer, wo sich Betrug, Schmuggel und illegaler Handel mit dem gewöhnlichen Handel vermischen. Vom Balkan bis Marokko analysiert er, wie Händler und Vermittler die von den Staaten und anderen Autoritäten auferlegten Normen umgehen oder verhandeln. Die Identifikation, die Repression sowie die wirtschaftlichen Praktiken der Netzwerke offenbaren so die gesellschaftliche Konstruktion der Illegalität und die anhaltenden Spannungen zwischen Regeln, kaufmännischen Logiken und Vertrauen.

How to distinguish the honest trader from the trafficker? From the end of the Middle Ages to contemporary times, this panel explores the gray areas of trade in the Mediterranean, where fraud, smuggling and trafficking intertwine with ordinary exchanges. From the Balkans to Morocco, he analyses how merchants and intermediaries circumvent or negotiate norms imposed by states and other authorities. The identification, repression and economic practices of networks thus reveal the social construction of illegality and the lasting tensions between rules, market logic and trust.
