Known from the 13th century, the estate was remodelled in 1750 and a 30-hectare grove of oak trees was planted as an extension of the park. In 1853, the castle is enlarged and an English-style park with beautiful subjects (cedars, sequoias, linden trees, magnolias, plane trees, etc.) is created. Today, redesigned by the garden designer Philippe Dubreuil, it unfolds between winding paths and grazed meadows with, in the center, a vegetable garden with dominant orange-yellow colors. During the storm of December 1999, more than 15,000 trees were felled. To ward off this fatal fate, the owners summon four masters of land art. Christian Lapie creates The Meadow of the In-between, Joël Shapiro with The Forest proposes an unstable sculpture, Antony Gormley imagines One and Other, a solitary observer culminating at 16 meters on a scrubby sequoia. Finally, Andy Goldsworthy creates three works: Cœur de Chêne and Cœur de Chêne II, made with carefully stacked logs, and Pool of light with 2,000 split chestnut logs that catch the light. This site offers a subtle dialogue between architecture, nature and contemporary art.
