When a territory breaks, it must find the means to continue to exist, to function and to reinvent itself. How to enable this adaptation by addressing major ecological and social challenges?
The example of Cyprus, a fragmented island, and Marseille.
Through the example of Cyprus, an island marked by territorial division since 1974, and that of Marseille, this meeting proposes to compare two Mediterranean territories facing, each in their own way, issues of transformation and adaptation, and in particular committed to the fight against undignified housing.
The architect Sophie Christodoulou will introduce the meeting by a historical reminder to examine the geographical and urban consequences of the division of the island: separation of the territory, presence of a buffer zone and appearance of new forms of urban development.
The study of the cases of the cities of Nicosia and Limassol, as well as housing solutions for displaced populations, will make it possible to draw parallels with Soliha’s actions on unworthy housing and the challenges of rehabilitation in Marseille, with a representative of SOLIHA Provence and the architect Nicolas Salmon-Legagneur.
This meeting will be an opportunity to compare the experiences of Cyprus and Marseille and to open a dialogue around architectural and urban practices capable of accompanying the transformations of territories. She will also discuss concrete examples of rehabilitation in the city center.

Sophie CHRISTODOULOU, architect
Nicolas SALMON-LEGAGNEUR, architect, NSL architects engineers
Jennifer SIMON DEFFRENES, head of the Department for the Fight against Undignified Housing, SOLIHA Provence
