Built at the end of the 12th century by Robert I de Dreux, brother of King Louis VII, its originality lies mainly in its architecture, innovative for the time. It is notably known for having belonged to Queen Jeanne d'Évreux, wife of Charles IV le Bel, from 1319 to 1370\. Communal property since 1923, it has been the subject of a rehabilitation program since 1982 which incorporates both an archaeological site and restoration measures. The furniture discovered on the site is now displayed inside the Heritage Interpretation Centre, a contemporary building built within the castle in 2005.
