The origin of Moutiers dates back to 450, when Saint Jean de Réôme, a hermit settled in Corsaint founded a community. In the 6th century, the monks settled in Moutiers. The abbey is considered to be the oldest in Burgundy. Its abbey church of the 12th century, destroyed during the revolution, had nothing to envy to that of Vézelay or Autun. At the end of the 17th century, the Maurist reform and the wise administration of Father Claude Charles de Rochechouart de Chandenier, friend of Saint Vincent de Paul, marked the beginning of reconstructions and a new boom. In the 18th century, the title of abbot of Moutiers Saint Jean was given to the bishops and dukes of Langres to compensate them for the creation of a bishopric in Dijon. It was these princes of the Church and notably Monsignor de Montmorin de Saint-Hérèm who built between 1747 and 1763 the abbey palace by the architect Claude Louis d'Aviler.
