"Heritage of photography" at the Château des ducs de Bretagne - Nantes History Museum
A key event of the fall season, the European Days of Heritage and Matrimony are devoted this year, in echo to the Bicentenary of photography, to the "Heritage of photography".
The Nantes History Museum is taking advantage of these two exceptional days to open its doors to the public for free, and invite visitors to discover the museum’s collections on this theme. Appointments will be proposed by the mediation team.
The celebration of the bicentenary is also an opportunity to showcase, online on the collections portal, part of the museum’s collection of old photographs.
This one has indeed the chance to preserve rare testimonies of the birth of this new mode of representation: four daguerreotypes dating from the year following the disclosure of the process by Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre in 1839. Many other photographs show the rapid evolution of techniques related to this new medium in the second part of the 19th century. All of these media still allow today to draw a realistic and sensitive portrait of the city and its inhabitants since the early 1840s.
