The Belgian surrender, in May 1940, caught the protectors of the patrimony by surprise.
A masterpiece of European art, painted by Van Eyck for the cathedral of Ghent, in Belgium, the Mystical Lamb Altarpiece, coveted by the Germans, must be sheltered outside the country without delay. It was at the Château de Pau that he unexpectedly found refuge, between 1940 and 1942.
This incredible story highlights not only the despoliation of works in wartime, but also the issues of conservation and restoration.

The national domain of Pau includes most of the domain of the Viscounts of Béarn, who later became kings of Navarre and later kings of France. It currently consists of three parts: The castle and the surrounding gardens, the low plant and the park. Originally, it was a fortified post surrounded by palisades, probably built by the Viscounts of Béarn in 1117\. Subsequently, the Mazères tower was built, then the first keep and the Montauser tower. At the end of the 12th century, the castle became the property of the counts of Foix; Transformation of the castle around 1370 by Gaston Phoebus: Construction of the large brick tower, the mill tower. Pau became the capital of Béarn in 1364\. Numerous and important transformations from 1462 to 1472\. In the sixteenth century, transformation of the castle in the taste of the Renaissance. In very poor condition during the Revolution, it served as a barracks. Under the Restoration, emergency work was carried out by architect Latapie. Louis-Philippe undertook a more complete restoration in 1838 with the architects Lefranc and Abbadie who modified the south facade and the west facade by building a new tower. Napoleon III continued the work with various architects: Peristyle, Napoleon III tower and the building surrounding it. The gardens, mostly laid out in the 16th century, were amputated during the Revolution. At the Restoration, the Basse Plante and the Grand Parc were returned to Louis XVIII by a society of citizens who had acquired them.
