According to tradition, St. Peter’s Cathedral was erected on the site of an old Christian building of the 6th century, the work of Bishop saint Pallais. The current building is the result of numerous construction and restoration campaigns that span from the 12th to the 18th centuries. It is largely rebuilt from the mid-15th century and very few ancient elements are preserved. Its buttresses with pinnacles, its buttoned arches and its imposing bell tower-porch high of 72m give it, from the outside, a quite Gothic look. The bell tower that houses the entrance to the cathedral has a large carved portal. The nave is covered with a framework on the central vessel while the aisles are arched with warheads. The nave is widened by the presence of eight side chapels. The slightly protruding transept, retains in the south arm a dome on pendants of the twelfth century and opens on a long bedside with ambulatory and nine radiant chapels. Only three of them escaped destruction, including the Axe chapel, decorated in Renaissance style. Finally, the cloister which still has two galleries of the thirteenth century and the conventual buildings adjoined in the southern part complete this heterogeneous episcopal ensemble.
