Als Direktor des Journal des Débats im 19. Jahrhundert leitete er dort einen Literatursalon, in dem der berühmteste Gast Victor Hugo war. Er schuf dort einen 10 ha großen englischen Park am Ufer der Bièvre, in dem zahlreiche Baumarten gepflanzt wurden, die heute zweihundert Jahre alt sind: Eichen, Kiefern, Platanen, Zedern, Mammutbäumen und kahlen Zypressen. Ein See und eine Insel verleihen ihr einen romantischen Charme.
Das Maison Littéraire de Victor Hugo wird anlässlich der Rendez-vous au jardin eine freie Besichtigung des Parks, literarische Veranstaltungen und eine Schatzsuche Auf den Spuren der Elenden.
Der Garten im Park des Château des Roches wird im englischen Stil gepflegt, wie er bereits zu Zeiten von Victor Hugo vorhanden war. Hugo hebt diesen Ort oft in seinen Versen hervor und schreibt sogar, vom Ufer des Rheins aus: "Nicht alle Tannen im Schwarzwald sind der Akazie wert, die sich im Hof der Felsen befindet."
