The castle of Chenonceau is a "landscape building" where architecture and landscape are intimately linked, where the right balance has been found between stone, water and vegetation. All its architectural gardens, ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary creations, are real gardens of memory resonating with the entire history of the castle. One of the main protagonists of the estate was Catherine de Médicis who, with the help of the French craftsman and scientist Bernard Palissy, designed the green garden, whose highlight today is a holm oak more than 200 years old. Then, the Queen of France imagines her own French garden, echoing the regular garden of Diane de Poitiers located in the eastern part of the estate. The latter was redesigned in the 19th century by Achille Duchêne, son of the garden gardener Henri Duchêne, with whom he worked on the garden of the Château de Bouges, both keen to revive the French-style garden whose model they spread throughout the world. Here, Diane’s garden is framed by a terraced walkway offering a bird’s-eye view over a large quadrangle of more than one hectare. The latter is organized into triangular patches of lawn around a central water jet six meters high. Other facilities such as a labyrinth, a vegetable garden and an orangery enliven the landscaped area, while a team of florists, including Jean-François Boucher, floral scenographer of the castle, elected Best Worker of France in 2000, watches every week, at the renewal of nearly 200 bouquets on the estate. In 2008, the cross garden dedicated to Russell Page and François-Xavier Lalanne, was created by Nicholas Tomlan, botanical director of the castle, according to the garden plans drawn by Russell Page, a great 20th century English landscape artist.
