In 1512, the kings of Navarre, expelled from Pamplona, found refuge in a castle located on a rocky spur facing the Pyrenees, overlooking the Gave de Pau. At the instigation of Marguerite de Navarre, sister of François I, the valiant fortress becomes a royal palace where the pleasure of the Renaissance gardens extends and amplifies the elegance of the architecture and decorations. On 13 December 1553, Henry of Navarre, the future Henry IV, was born there. Two centuries later, the park is gradually abandoned and the expansion of the city on the north side reduces it. After the Revolution, the inhabitants and the municipality, incorporated, mobilized and redeemed the whole to save it. Under Louis-Philippe, works allow to gradually reconquer the lost spaces and bridges are created to span two streets, facilitating circulation within this green space. It was not until the storms of the 1990s that the aging of the site and its necessary restoration were under control. Today, it consists of three spaces. The first, close to the house and inspired by the Renaissance, consists of small squares of boxwood animated by varied and colorful plants. The second, called 'Basse-Plante', is a quinconce planted with linden trees, plane trees, and chestnut trees whose lawns are the delight of the sheep. Finally, the third consists of two parks. One, forested, located on the rock, is a true refuge for biodiversity, while the other, landscaped, houses many remarkable trees. Rich in its history and the plant varieties that compose it, this national domain has regained all its splendor.
