Hosted for ten years by the Groupe de Recherche sur le Patrimoine Ollioulais (GRPO), Marc Hervé’s collection has taken off to the "Musée de la clef et de la serrure" and is now fully displayed at 112 avenue Barthélemy Dagnan. Thanks to the will of the GRPO—presided over by René Gramondi until his death—and with the support of the city, the exhibition, unprecedented in the region, was launched in 2016 at the premises of the association, 1 rue Pierre et Marie Curie. The GRPO volunteers had met Marc Hervé, a passionate person who, for fifty years, collected locks, padlocks and keys kept in his garage and apartment, with the unwavering support of his wife Huguette. Cleidophile and serrurophile recognized, Marc Hervé discovers his vocation in the 1960s, his first piece, acquired in 1962, came from Roman antiquity. He enriches his collection with flea markets, at scrap dealers, then at online auctions. A lock of more than 20 kg bought at the Marseille flea market and restored with a friend was the starting point for a more systematic collection, while at the same time he became a lock seller. Admirer of the work of artisans and Companions—whose "styles" he identifies—Marc Hervé has collected several hundred keys from the 1st century to the present day, as well as locks dating back to the 15th century. Today, some 1,000 pieces are made available to the city for the museum: it remains its owner but they are accessible to the general public. On two exhibition levels, the visitor discovers forged keys, Gothic locks, masterpieces of the Renaissance and refined models of the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XVI, each object testifying to an era and the know-how of the craftsmen. Marc Hervé has personally restored all the parts, which are in working order, and can talk about them for hours. If you have the chance to visit when he is present, you will be able to share his passion.
