Located in the heart of the Domaine de la Vallée-aux-Loups, the Arboretum suggests walks in a peaceful atmosphere. Its charm is as much linked to its protected location in the hollow of the valley, to its history, as to its impressive plant collection. Initially composed of a French garden in its heart and nourishing lands around, this aristocratic estate evolved in the 19th century, the French garden giving way to an English garden, following the tastes of the time in terms of landscape. In 1890, the Croux nurseries invested the estate and used the English garden as a demonstration park for their trees for their clientele, and the surrounding farmland became horticultural production grounds. Most of the remarkable centenary trees of the Arboretum are the legacy of this prestigious showcase. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Croux nurseries were considered to be the most important in France, both in terms of the size of the farm and the variety and quality of the plants offered. The Arboretum also houses a collection of Convolvulaceae entrusted to botanist and designer Patrick Blanc, which has been recognized since 1999 as a national collection by the Conservatoire des Collections Végétales Spécialisées (CCVS). In 2013, the Department acquired 66 bonsai from the collection of the French specialist Remy Samson, who exhibited his production just a stone’s throw from the Arboretum. These miniature trees, of various species and styles, some of which are very old, are today presented in a dedicated greenhouse.
