The Château d'Angers is an extraordinary monument!
Occupied by man since the Neolithic, this high point is the cradle of Angevin history! Overlooking the river, it offers you an exceptional view of Angers as well as a dive into the heart of the history of France and Europe.
Inside its enclosure, which made it the largest fortress of the 13th century, the castle keeps heritage treasures, such as the tapestry of the Apocalypse, a monumental masterpiece unique in the world listed at UNESCO!
Its 25,000 m2 maintained in the respect of the environment and classified Refuge LPO are a haven of peace in the city center!

The castle is composed of two elements: the fortress built by Saint-Louis in 1230 and the castle-residence of the dukes of Anjou. The fortress has 17 towers of about thirty meters high and 18 meters wide, built in an alternation of schist and tuffeau; the walls were reinforced in 1592 by a thick earth rampart; each of the gates was defended by a double harrow. From 1360, the castle, which became a ducal residence, is transformed: royal lodging, chapel built in the early 15th century, chatelet built in 1450\. In 1373, Duke Louis I of Anjou commissioned a series of tapestries on the theme of the Apocalypse, a masterpiece is registered with UNESCO.
