Located on a promontory, the castle of Lauris was endowed in the 18th century by Jean de Montaud d'Arlatan with one of the largest architectural gardens of the time. The so-called new garden is spread over seven terraces; the two highest ones are open to the public. A conservatory garden of tinctorial plants reconnects with the village’s past, which has been the centre of natural colour production since the 16th century. More than 250 species of plants are presented there, including Garance, widely cultivated locally from the 18th century until 1900, for the production of a red intended for cotton printing. Alongside the passionate gardener, volunteers ensure that the plants from which dyes are extracted for dyeing, but also for painting, cosmetics or food are well known. In contrast, the public garden is decorated with white-flowering plants. Witnesses of a rich hydraulic network, ornamented monumental basins and fountains accompany the journey.
