The Library opened by Louis Pradel, Mayor of Lyon, on December 6, 1972, consists of two structures. One, open to the public, extends over 5 floors horizontally. The other, called the silo, is the great dark vertical tower that stands in front of you. Its 17 floors contain storage stores, for a total of 90 km of shelving. Each floor can hold four to five linear kilometres of shelving. The climatic conditions are controlled, by ventilation, in order to preserve the documents at best: the temperature (18°C) and the hygrometry rate (50% humidity) are kept constant throughout the year, the most important thing for the old bottoms is to avoid sudden variations in temperature. A mechanical book hoist (the "pater noster") allows the transport of documents, between the floors, to the distribution banks. The Silo contains more than 2.4 million documents, rare and precious works, newspapers and magazines, books, microsillons, posters, prints, postcards, photographs ... With all these documents, t
