Geboren 1964 in China und seit 2023 in Vernon ansässig, entfaltet GAO Bo ein Werk, das von Erinnerung, Geschichte und Weitergabe geprägt ist. Seine Arbeit ist ein unaufhörliches Streben nach Experimenten und neuer formaler Forschung, die Fotografie, gemischte Techniken, Installationen und Performances vereint.
Heute lebt und arbeitet er in Peking, Paris und Vernon. Er ist Absolvent der Kunstakademie von Sichuan und der Kunstakademie der Tsinghua-Universität (Peking). Das Werk, das er seit über dreißig Jahren gestaltet, wird von seinen Reisen nach Tibet, den Theorien des Künstlers Marcel DUCHAMP und dem Denken des chinesischen Weisen LAO Tseu genährt. Im Jahr 2011 initiierte er den "Laostismus", ein philosophisches und ästhetisches Konzept, das seine Gesamtkunstwerke durchdringt. Die Werke von GAO Bo werden weltweit in Museen, Institutionen und privaten Sammlungen ausgestellt und gesammelt.
Das Werk von GAO Bo ist das Ergebnis eines iterativen Prozesses, der sich in eine lange Zeit einfügt und zahlreiche Hin- und Rückfahrten zu seinen Kreationen macht, die er verändert, misshandelt oder sogar zerstört. Das unaufhörliche Hin und Her zwischen Schöpfung und Zerstörung, Handlung und Meditation, positiv und negativ, ist ein Abbild der Vergänglichkeit der Welt und der vielen Leben des Künstlers.
"OFFRANDES, Tibet 1985-1995 Fotografie von GAO Bo" ist das perfekte Beispiel für diesen Prozess. Die außergewöhnlichen Werke stammen aus einer Sammlung von mehreren tausend Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien, die der Künstler zwischen 1985 und 1995 auf aufeinanderfolgenden Reisen nach Tibet in 35mm aufgenommen hat. Diese Rollen Film blieben fast fünfzehn Jahre lang unverändert, während denen GAO Bo andere Abenteuer erlebte: Frankreich und seine Kultur, seine Freundschaft mit Christian CAUJOLLE seit 1990 in der Agentur VU; Tibet erneut mit der Veröffentlichung eines seltenen Buches; Ehe; Peking, die Versuchung der Architektur...
Im Sommer 2009, unzufrieden, kehrt der Künstler zu seinem Werk zurück und macht aus diesen Filmen 148 Einzelabzüge, eine Ansammlung von fast 400 Fotos: Pilger, die sich in den Straßen niederwerfen und zu den heiligen Stätten marschieren, Schatten und Licht auf den Gebetsmühlen der Klöster, faszinierende Gesichter von Lamas oder Bauern, Blicke, Landschaften am Fuße der hohen Gipfel des Himalayas, die man mehr erkennt als sieht...
Er nimmt dann wieder die Straße nach Tibet mit diesen 148 Brettern in seinem Gepäck, um seine Freunde zu treffen, darunter der alte Lama, der ihn schon vor Jahren empfangen hatte. Mit ihnen, mit seinem eigenen Blut, erfindet er eine unbekannte Sprache, die "Stimme der Seele", die er in der Art eines Kalligraphen auf jede Ausgabe zeichnet und so unauslöschlich seine Bindung an das tibetische Hochland, an ihre Kultur, an ihre Mystik besiegelt.

Born in 1964 in China and settled in Vernon since 2023, GAO Bo unfolds a work inhabited by memory, history, and transmission. His work is a constant quest for experimentation and new formal research, combining photography, mixed techniques, installations and performances.
Today, he lives and works between Beijing, Paris and Vernon. He graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts and the Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing). The work he has been shaping for more than thirty years is nourished by his travels in Tibet, the theories of the artist Marcel DUCHAMP and the thought of the Chinese sage LAO Tzu. In 2011, he initiated "Laostism", a philosophical and aesthetic concept that permeates his works of total art. The works of GAO Bo are exhibited and collected by museums, institutions and private collections around the world.
The work of GAO Bo is the result of an iterative process that takes place over a long period, making many trips back and forth on his creations that he modifies, mistreats, or even destroys. This ceaseless coming and going between creation and destruction, action and meditation, positive and negative, is in the image of the impermanence of the world and the many lives of the artist.
"OFFERINGS, Tibet 1985-1995 Photograph of GAO Bo" is the perfect illustration of this process. The extraordinary works are drawn from a set of several thousand black and white photographs taken in 35mm by the artist from 1985 to 1995 during successive trips to Tibet. These rolls of film remained as they were for nearly fifteen years, during which GAO Bo had other adventures: France and its culture, his friendship with Christian CAUJOLLE since 1990, at the VU agency; Tibet again with the publication of a rare book; wedding; Beijing, the temptation of architecture...
In the summer of 2009, dissatisfied, the artist got back to work and made from these films 148 unique prints, a collection of almost 400 photos: pilgrims prostrating themselves in the streets on their way to the holy places, shadow and light on the monasteries' prayer mills, fascinating faces of llamas or peasants, looks, landscapes at the foot of the high peaks of the Himalayas that are more guessed than we see...
He then takes the road to Tibet again with these 148 boards in his luggage to join his friends, including the old Lama who had welcomed him years earlier. With them, with his own blood, he invents an unknown language, the "voice of the soul", which he traces in the manner of a calligrapher on each print, thus indelibly sealing his attachment to the Tibetan highlands, to their culture, to their mysticism.

Oggi vive e lavora tra Pechino, Parigi e Vernon. Si è laureato presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti del Sichuan e l'Accademia di Belle Arti dell'Università Tsinghua (Pechino). L'opera che egli crea da più di trent'anni è alimentata dai suoi viaggi in Tibet, dalle teorie dell'artista Marcel DUCHAMP e dal pensiero del saggio cinese LAO Tseu. Nel 2011, ha avviato il "laostismo", un concetto filosofico ed estetico che permea le sue opere d'arte totale. Le opere di GAO Bo sono esposte e raccolte da musei, istituzioni e collezioni private in tutto il mondo.
L'opera di GAO Bo è il risultato di un processo iterativo che si iscrive in una lunga durata, facendo numerosi viaggi e ritorni sulle sue creazioni che modifica, maltratta o addirittura distrugge. L'incessante andare e venire tra creazione e distruzione, azione e meditazione, positivo e negativo, è a immagine dell'impermanenza del mondo e delle numerose vite dell'artista.
"OFFRANDES, Tibet 1985-1995 Fotografia di GAO Bo" è la perfetta illustrazione di questo processo. Le straordinarie opere sono tratte da un insieme di diverse migliaia di fotografie in bianco e nero scattate in 35mm dall'artista dal 1985 al 1995 durante viaggi successivi in Tibet. Questi rotoli di pellicole sono rimasti intatti per circa quindici anni, durante i quali GAO Bo ha vissuto altre avventure: la Francia e la sua cultura, l'amicizia con Christian CAUJOLLE dal 1990, all'agenzia VU; il Tibet ancora con la pubblicazione di un libro raro; matrimonio; Pechino, la tentazione dell'architettura...
Nell'estate del 2009, insoddisfatto, l'artista si rimette al lavoro e realizza da questi film 148 stampe uniche, un assemblaggio di quasi 400 foto: pellegrini che si prostrano nelle strade in marcia verso i luoghi santi, ombra e luce sui mulini a preghiera dei monasteri, volti affascinanti di lama o contadini, sguardi, paesaggi ai piedi delle alte vette dell'Himalaya che si intravedono più di quanto si veda...
Poi prende di nuovo la strada del Tibet con queste 148 tavole nel suo bagaglio per raggiungere i suoi amici, tra cui il vecchio Lama che lo aveva accolto anni prima. Con loro, col proprio sangue, inventa un linguaggio sconosciuto, la "voce dell'anima", che traccia alla maniera di un calligrafo su ogni tiratura, sigillando così in modo indelebile il suo attaccamento agli altipiani tibetani, alla loro cultura, al loro misticismo.

Son travail est une quête incessante d’expérimentations et de nouvelles recherches formelles, alliant photographie, techniques mixtes, installations et performances.
Aujourd’hui, il vit et travaille entre Pékin, Paris et Vernon. Il est diplômé de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts du Sichuan et de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de l’Université Tsinghua (Pékin). L’oeuvre qu’il façonne depuis plus de trente ans est nourrie de ses voyages au Tibet, des théories de l’artiste Marcel DUCHAMP et de la pensée du sage chinois LAO Tseu. En 2011, il a initié le « laostisme », un concept philosophique et esthétique qui imprègne ses oeuvres d’art total. Les oeuvres de GAO Bo sont exposées et collectionnées par des musées, institutions et collections privées à travers le monde.
L’oeuvre de GAO Bo est le résultat d’un processus itératif qui s’inscrit dans la longue durée, fait de nombreux allers-retours sur ses créations qu’il modifie, maltraite, voire détruit. Ce va et vient incessant entre création et destruction, action et méditation, positif et négatif, est à l’image de l’impermanence du monde et des nombreuses vies de l’artiste.
« OFFRANDES, Tibet 1985-1995 Photographie de GAO Bo » est la parfaite illustration de ce processus. Les extraordinaires oeuvres sont tirées d’un ensemble de plusieurs milliers de photographies noir et blanc prises en 35mm par l’artiste de 1985 à 1995 au cours de voyages successifs au Tibet. Ces rouleaux de pellicules sont restés en l’état pendant près de quinze durant lesquels GAO Bo vivait d’autres aventures : la France et sa culture, son amitié avec Christian CAUJOLLE depuis 1990, à l’agence VU ; le Tibet encore avec la publication d’un livre rare ; mariage ; Pékin, la tentation de l’architecture…
A l’été 2009, insatisfait, l’artiste se remet à l’ouvrage et réalise à partir de ces films 148 tirages uniques, assemblage de presque 400 photos : pèlerins se prosternant dans les rues en marche vers les lieux saints, ombre et lumière sur les moulins à prière des monastères, visages fascinants de lamas ou de paysans, regards, paysages aux pieds des hauts sommets de l’Himalaya qu’on devine plus qu’on ne voit…
Il prend ensuite à nouveau la route du Tibet avec ces 148 planches dans ses bagages pour rejoindre ses amis dont le vieux Lama qui l’avait accueilli des années plus tôt. Avec eux, avec son propre sang, il invente un langage inconnu, la « voix de l’âme », qu’il trace à la manière d’un calligraphe sur chaque tirage, scellant ainsi de manière indélébile son attachement aux hauts plateaux tibétains, à leur culture, à leur mystique.

La obra que ha moldeado durante más de treinta años se nutre de sus viajes al Tíbet, de las teorías del artista Marcel DUCHAMP y del pensamiento del sabio chino LAO Tseu. En 2011, inició el "laostismo", un concepto filosófico y estético que impregna sus obras de arte total. Las obras de GAO Bo se exhiben y coleccionan en museos, instituciones y colecciones privadas de todo el mundo.
La obra de GAO Bo es el resultado de un proceso iterativo que se inscribe en la larga duración, hace numerosos idas y vueltas sobre sus creaciones que modifica, maltrata o incluso destruye. El incesante ir y venir entre creación y destrucción, acción y meditación, positivo y negativo, es imagen de la impermanencia del mundo y de las muchas vidas del artista.

Las extraordinarias obras están extraídas de un conjunto de varios miles de fotografías en blanco y negro tomadas en 35mm por el artista entre 1985 y 1995 durante viajes sucesivos al Tíbet. Estos rollos de películas se mantuvieron sin cambios durante casi quince años, durante los cuales GAO Bo vivió otras aventuras: Francia y su cultura, su amistad con Christian CAUJOLLE desde 1990, en la agencia VU; El Tíbet, con la publicación de un libro raro; matrimonio; Pekín, la tentación de la arquitectura...
En el verano de 2009, insatisfecho, el artista se pone manos a la obra y realiza a partir de estas películas 148 tiradas únicas, ensamblaje de casi 400 fotos: peregrinos postrados en las calles en marcha hacia los lugares santos, sombra y luz sobre los molinos de oración de los monasterios, rostros fascinantes de lamas o de campesinos, miradas, paisajes a los pies de las altas cumbres del Himalaya que se adivinan más de lo que se ven...
Luego toma de nuevo la ruta del Tíbet con esas 148 planchas en su equipaje para reunirse con sus amigos, incluido el viejo lama que lo había acogido años antes. Con ellos, con su propia sangre, inventa un lenguaje desconocido, la "voz del alma", que traza a la manera de un calígrafo en cada impresión, sellando así de forma indeleble su apego a las tierras altas tibetanas, a su cultura, a su misticismo.
