Vor der Mündung des Flusses „Rivière d’Abord“, in einer Tiefe von mehr als vierzig Metern und am Rande eines beeindruckenden Felsabhangs, entdecken Taucher bis heute einen ebenso faszinierenden wie rätselhaften Ort: ein wahres Unterwasser-Heiligtum, in dem sich mehr als hundert Schiffsanker versammelt finden. Ob offen auf dem Meeresgrund liegend oder teilweise im Sediment verborgen – sie bilden ein außergewöhnliches Ensemble, ein stummes, aber beredtes Zeugnis der maritimen Geschichte von La Réunion.
Dieser „Ankerfriedhof“ gibt ebenso viele Rätsel auf, wie er beeindruckt. Denn der Anker – ein unverzichtbares Element der Segelschifffahrt – stellte für Reeder und Kapitäne einst einen beträchtlichen Wert dar. Sein Verlust war weder in wirtschaftlicher noch in technischer Hinsicht eine Kleinigkeit. Wie also lässt sich eine derartige Ansammlung aufgegebener Gegenstände an ein und demselben Ort erklären? Handelt es sich um wiederholte Unfälle aufgrund der Ankerbedingungen, um plötzliche Stürme, um einen besonders tückischen Meeresgrund oder gar um das bewusste Abwerfen der Anker in Notsituationen?
In diesen versunkenen Relikten spiegelt sich ein ganzes Stück des Hafenlebens und der Tücken der Schifffahrt im Indischen Ozean wider. Jeder Anker erzählt – gleichsam zwischen den Zeilen – von einem Manöver, einem Sturm, einem Zwischenstopp oder einem nur knapp abgewendeten Schiffbruch. Dieser einzigartige Ort lädt dazu ein, in die Vergangenheit einzutauchen und die Gepflogenheiten, Zwänge und Risiken des Ankerns in der Bucht von Saint-Pierre – einst ein bedeutendes Zentrum des Seehandels in der Region – zu verstehen.

Off the mouth of the Rivière d’Abord, at a depth of over forty meters and along the edge of an impressive rocky drop-off, scuba divers still discover a site today that is as fascinating as it is enigmatic: a veritable underwater sanctuary containing more than a hundred marine anchors. Resting on the seabed or partially buried, they form an exceptional collection—a silent yet eloquent vestige of Réunion’s maritime history.
This "anchor graveyard" is as intriguing as it is impressive. After all, the anchor—an essential component of sailing—once represented significant value for shipowners and captains; losing one was never a trivial matter, whether economically or technically. How, then, can one explain such a concentration of abandoned objects in a single location? Was it the result of repeated accidents linked to anchoring conditions, sudden storms, or a seabed that caused anchors to snag? Or perhaps intentional jettisoning during emergencies?
Through these submerged relics, a whole aspect of port life and the perils of navigating the Indian Ocean comes to light. Each anchor implicitly tells a story—of a maneuver, a storm, a port call, or a narrowly averted shipwreck. This unique site invites us to step back in time and try to understand the practices, constraints, and risks associated with anchoring in the roadstead of Saint-Pierre, once a major hub of maritime trade in the region.

Di fronte alla Rivière d’Abord, a oltre quaranta metri di profondità e ai margini di un’imponente parete rocciosa a picco, i subacquei scoprono ancora oggi un sito tanto affascinante quanto enigmatico: un vero e proprio santuario sottomarino che raccoglie più di cento ancore marine. Adagiate sui sedimenti o parzialmente insabbiate, esse costituiscono un insieme eccezionale, una testimonianza silenziosa ma eloquente della storia marittima dell’isola di Riunione.
Questo «cimitero di ancore» suscita interrogativi tanto quanto stupore. L’ancora, infatti – elemento essenziale della navigazione a vela – rappresentava un tempo un bene di grande valore per armatori e capitani; la sua perdita non era mai un fatto trascurabile, né sotto il profilo economico né sotto quello tecnico. Come spiegare, dunque, una tale concentrazione di oggetti abbandonati in un unico luogo? Si tratta forse di incidenti ripetuti legati alle condizioni di ancoraggio, a tempeste improvvise o a fondali che trattenevano tenacemente le ancore, oppure di pratiche di alleggerimento volontario in situazioni di emergenza?
Attraverso queste vestigia sommerse riaffiora un intero spaccato della vita portuale e delle insidie della navigazione nell’Oceano Indiano. Ogni ancora racconta, implicitamente, una manovra, una tempesta, uno scalo o un naufragio evitato per un soffio. Questo sito unico invita così a ripercorrere il filo del tempo per cercare di comprendere le consuetudini, le difficoltà e i rischi legati all’ancoraggio nella rada di Saint-Pierre, un tempo importante snodo del commercio marittimo della regione.

Frente a la Rivière d’Abord, a más de cuarenta metros de profundidad y al borde de un impresionante talud rocoso, los buceadores descubren aún hoy un lugar tan fascinante como enigmático: un auténtico santuario submarino que alberga más de un centenar de anclas marinas. Ya sea descansando sobre los sedimentos o parcialmente enterradas, conforman un conjunto excepcional, un vestigio silencioso pero elocuente de la historia marítima de La Reunión.
Este «cementerio de anclas» suscita tantas preguntas como admiración. Y es que el ancla, elemento esencial de la navegación a vela, representaba antaño un valor considerable para armadores y capitanes. Su pérdida nunca era un asunto trivial, ni desde el punto de vista económico ni desde el técnico. ¿Cómo explicar, entonces, tal concentración de objetos abandonados en un mismo lugar? ¿Se trata de accidentes recurrentes relacionados con las condiciones de fondeo, de tormentas repentinas, de fondos marinos que atrapan fácilmente el ancla, o bien de prácticas de aligeramiento voluntario de la carga en situaciones de emergencia?
A través de estos vestigios sumergidos aflora una parte importante de la vida portuaria y de las vicisitudes de la navegación en el océano Índico. Cada ancla evoca, de forma implícita, una maniobra, una tormenta, una escala o un naufragio evitado por poco. Este sitio único invita así a remontar el curso del tiempo para intentar comprender los usos, las limitaciones y los riesgos del fondeo en la rada de Saint-Pierre, que en otro tiempo fue un importante enclave del comercio marítimo en la región.
