Dedicated to the bishop of Saintes, Vivien, the current church is built on the site of three successive Christian buildings. The first, in the 6th century, was a basilica raised around the tomb of the saint in an early Christian necropolis. The second, before the 12th century, was a priory occupied by regular canons razed after 1572\. A new chapel was built in 1617, demolished in 1840\. The current building is a neoclassical church built between 1840 and 1845 by architect Brossard, modeled on early Christian basilicas.
