The castle of Bourg Joly and its vineyards are located on the hill of Puy de Mont, in the town of Saint Martin de Sanzay, a quarter of an hour from Saumur. The soil of the vineyard consists of clay-limestone fluvial deposits with siliceous gravel on a support of Cénomaniennes marls. The first wines of the Château date from at least 1560.
The exceptional semi-buried cellar was built in 1836 with a remarkable apparatus of tuffeau and hard stone; its dimensions (300m2) suggests a vineyard of 40 ha or the surface of the hill. The vineyard activity of the castle was restored in 2019 gathering 6 ha of plots on the east side of the hill. A new cellar was inaugurated for the 2021 harvest in an old barn.
The Vines and the botanical park form an integrated whole governed by a will to favor natural health of plants, beauty of landscapes and diversity of ecosystems.
