Conference around a painting: the treaty of Bruzzolo
April 1610. In the modest castle of Bruzolo, in Piedmont, the Duke of Savoy Charles Emmanuel I and the Duke of Lesdiguières François de Bonne signed two treaties of alliance between France and Savoy. The plan is ambitious. It aims to redraw the map of Europe, to review the political balances of the continent, to counter the power of the Habsburgs. The assassination of Henry IV put an end to the project, which sank into oblivion. Yet, two and a half centuries later, a King of Italy commissioned a Florentine painter to paint a painting depicting the signature of Bruzolo’s treatises. How, since 1870, Lesdiguières appears on a canvas in one of the most prestigious museums of Florence, is the question to which this conference will try to answer.
