Dated under its pediment of 1807, the house was originally the central body of the Relais de la Poste aux Chevaux which had just left the city center to settle in the southern suburb of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, where its activity continued for about fifty years, until the rise of the railway in the valley.
At the very end of the nineteenth century, Thadée Natanson, director of La Revue blanche, and his wife Misia, then «in search of a large house by the water that was not too far from Paris» (*), had a crush on an excursion for this old relay. The vast residence and its wooded park were then, from 1897 to 1899, the resort of their friends writers and artists, in the first rank of which the Nabis painters Vuillard, Bonnard, Roussel and Vallotton, as well as Toulouse-Lautrec, inspiring them with many paintings now scattered in museums and collections around the world.
