Immerse yourself in the daily life and splendor of high society in La Rochelle with Suzanne Van Hoogwerff, daughter of a merchant, who will guide you in costume through the town’s private mansions.
Discover the history of this merchant elite, enriched in particular by the white gold of Santo Domingo: sugar. Suzanne will tell you about her daily life, the meetings in small companies, the role of women, the entertainment of the time, as well as the strategies to integrate into this privileged environment.
Witnessing the secrets of that time, it will lead you to the slave revolt, an event that caused the bankruptcy of many families, including his own.

A fishing village founded in the 10th century, La Rochelle became an important port in the 12th century. Endowed with broad «freedoms» by the Duke of Aquitaine, Guillaume X, La Rochelle freed himself from feudal tutelage. In 1199, Guillaume de Montmirail became the first mayor of La Rochelle.
13th century: Trade The Middle Ages marked its heyday with the trade of wine and salt with merchants from several ports and towns in northern Europe, known as the Hanseatic League. Although La Rochelle was never a Hanseatic city, it remained the largest French trading post on the Atlantic until the 15th century and a Protestant ally.
Protestant Rochelle The city’s independence naturally led it to welcome the new ideas of the Reformation. The Rochelais opted for the Reformed cause during the Protestant coup d'état of 9 January 1568\. La Rochelle gained the status of a free city and flourished, from 1590 to 1620, both economically and culturally.
