In 1969, Gabriel Albert (1904-2000), a retired carpenter-cabinetmaker, decided to realize his dream: to model human-sized statues, made of cement, and offer them to the eyes of all, in the garden that surrounds his small house of Nantillé. For 20 years, he tirelessly creates this poetic universe, showing inventiveness and a pronounced taste for staging. In total, he created 420 statues and busts, representing famous people (singers, actors, politicians, historical figures) or anonymous, as well as animals. Today listed as a historical monument, the Jardin de Gabriel continues to amaze and arouse the curiosity of passers-by and specialists in raw art and naïve art. It is the reflection of these artists from the rural province in the tradition of Facteur Cheval.
