As part of a partnership between the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital and the Paris Cité University, the Libraries and Museums Directorate of the Paris Cité University invites you to discover an exhibition of 12 panels. The exhibition on loan from Université Paris Cité was conceived by Raphaële Andrault and Ariane Bayle, and is the result of multidisciplinary research combining the history of medicine, philosophy, and literature. Pain management is sometimes seen as a new, neglected practice in the past. Yet pain was already a concern in the 16th – 18th centuries. Even if the medicine of that time is partly powerless to remedy it, doctors often mention it and always seek to relieve it. Focusing on the period of the 16th – 18th centuries allows us to change our perspective on this problem.
