The parish of Saint Étienne de Jarnioux replaces the ancient church of the Middle Ages, Sainte Catherine. The new church was erected at the foot of the hill set back from the location of the trade halls, 24 years after their dismantling. Construction began in 1888, and the church was consecrated on 16 September 1889\. Before this date, Jarnioux was attached to the parish of Saint-Martin de Ville sur Jarnioux. The service was also celebrated in the chapel of Saint Catherine, prebend of the lords of Jarnioux. The construction of the church was done under the impulse of Mr. Auguste Guinon, first mayor of Jarnioux (the town had been created in 1869 separating from Ville sur Jarnioux). The mayor himself participated largely in the financing of the work on 189,000 francs, total cost, he donated 158,000 francs (these are the gold francs of 1889).
