The breed of Przewalski’s horses, which lived in herds in the arid steppes and plateaus of Asia, was until recently considered extinct in the wild (these equines disappeared in the wild in 1969). In 1993, the French association Takh released a group of these horses from zoos in the Cévennes. A new phase of the experiment began ten years later: to bring twelve of these horses by plane to Mongolia, in an attempt to reestablish them there.
Przewalski’s horse continues to be gradually reintroduced into its natural environment. Today, the world population of Przewalski is about 2,000 individuals, of which 1,600 live in captivity and 350 in the Mongolian steppes. Long presumed 100% wild, the horses of Przewalski actually have a tamed ancestor, the horses of Botai, domesticated by man more than 5000 years ago in Kazakhstan.
