Minor Tides
The exhibition Minor Tides brings together three young artists who focus on portraiture in their photographic practice: Lina Geoushy, Sarah Jade Sullivan and Farren van Wyk.

In close relation with their family history and cultural heritage, the three artists use portraiture as tool for representing collective identity, but also as an instrument for critically re-examining history and reclaiming it for the present.
Egyptian artist Lina Geoushy revisits and reclaims pioneering female figures in her country’s history, whilst casting a lucid and critical look at the Egypt's current problems. Sarah Jade Sullivan focuses on the young generation living in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, , a territory with which she has important family and personal ties, exploring the ways in which these young people navigate a still very present colonial heritage, and difficult economic conditions. Farren van Wyk, a South African and Dutch artist, takes as her starting point the violent and colonial political history of her two countries of origin. Her portraits of herslef with her family revisit the iconographies that have accompanied this history, whilst forming their own personal homage to being mixed.
Collectively, these projects form the exhibition Minor Tides, a title that alludes to currents that can appear almost imperceptible, but are in fact part of a deep underlying movement, a sign of profound change.

L’exposition Marées mineures réunit trois jeunes artistes qui font du portrait le centre de leur pratique photographique: Lina Geoushy, Sarah Jade Sullivan et Farren van Wyk.

En lien étroit avec leur histoire familiale et leur héritage culturel, les trois artistes mobilisent le portrait comme outil de représentation individuelle et collective, et comme instrument de réexamen critique de l’histoire, et de réappropriation de celle-ci.
L’artiste égyptienne Lina Geoushy revisite et se réapproprie des figures féminines pionnières de l’histoire égyptienne, tout en posant un regard lucide et critique sur la société contemporaine de son pays. Sarah Jade Sullivan mène un travail sur la jeune génération de Saint-Vincent-et-les-Grenadines, territoire avec lequel elle entretient d’étroits liens familiaux et personnels, explorant les manières dont cette génération compose avec un héritage colonial encore très présent, et une conjoncture économique difficile. Farren van Wyk, artiste sud-africaine et néerlandaise, prend pour point de départ l’histoire politique violente et coloniale de ses deux pays d’origine. Ses portraits avec sa famille revisitent les iconographies qui ont accompagné cette histoire, tout en formant leur hommage personnel à la couleur.
Collectivement, ces projets forment l’exposition Marées mineures, un titre faisant allusion à des courants d’apparence presque imperceptible, mais relevant en réalité d’un mouvement de fond, signe de changement en profondeur.
