On September 19 and 20, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the National Customs Museum will welcome the public in a recently restored building, whose extensive renovation work was completed in September 2025.
There are still many people from Bordeaux and visitors who have not had the opportunity to discover this exceptional heritage, built nearly three centuries ago by the architect Jacques Gabriel.
Preserving and transmitting this emblematic place while bringing it to life: such is the ambition of the museum and its teams, alongside the customs services, which still occupy part of the Hôtel des Douanes. The year 2026 was thus marked by several cultural collaborations that enriched the museum’s programming.
On Sunday 20 September, history students from the Université Paris-Est Créteil will present Les Embarras du contribuable, a costume show inspired by texts by Louis-Sébastien Mercier, 1781-1788. Through this humorous evocation of the eighteenth century, the public will discover how tax and customs issues cross eras.
Three 30-minute performances will be offered in the main courtyard of the Hôtel des Douanes: at 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The National Customs Museum is located in the former Hotel des Fermes du ROI de Bordeaux. This jewel of customs heritage is also an emblematic building of 18th century Bordeaux. It was built between 1735 and 1738 specifically to house the General Farm, a private company that collected taxes under the Ancien Régime on behalf of the king. The building was the gateway for goods transported by boats and landed in the hall to be controlled by the farm clerks, ancestors of the customs officers. The building is organized around a rectangular courtyard that received the goods before and after customs clearance. The classical facade designed by Jacques Gabriel is remarkable for the balance of its proportions. The pediments were made by sculptor Jacques Verberckt, who also designed the fountain against the wall of the inner courtyard.
