The exhibition examines Walt Disney’s cultural, architectural and urban heritage. A total work of art, the Disney universe is much more than a registered trademark. It is one of the main supports of the western collective unconscious in the 20th century.
From the early animated films of the 1920s to the latest blockbusters, generations of viewers have grown up with the standards, values and patterns of Disney stories. Creator of an entertainment empire encompassing media, movies and theme parks, Walt Disney has imagined fantasy worlds where reality is scripted. But what lies behind the apparent innocence of its reassuring characters, and what kind of city does the Disney formula produce? While the world of Disney relies heavily on nostalgia, it is also the incubator of major cinematographic innovations, new principles of spatial planning and technological research. The exhibition The Architecture of Staged Realities addresses Walt Disney’s legacy as a mirror of contemporary society and its cultural production, both in terms of identity construction and architecture.
