Flemish and Dutch painting of the seventeenth century is full of scenes where foods (cheeses, herrings, lemons, lobsters etc.), abundantly arranged on sumptuous tables, attract the eye. But what do these meticulously represented dishes really reveal? Behind their seductive appearance is often concealed a double language: on the one hand, a moral message about the vanity of earthly pleasures, and on the other hand, an erotic and sexual symbolism that knowledgeable viewers of the time knew how to decipher without difficulty.

La peinture flamande et néerlandaise du XVIIe siècle regorge de scènes où les aliments (fromages, harengs, citrons, homards etc), abondamment disposés sur de somptueuses tables, attirent le regard. Mais que révèlent réellement ces mets minutieusement représentés ? Derrière leur apparence séduisante se dissimule souvent un double langage : d'une part, un message moral sur la vanité des plaisirs terrestres, et d'autre part, une symbolique érotique et sexuelle que les spectateurs avertis de l’époque savaient déchiffrer sans peine.

Vlaamse en Nederlandse schilderkunst uit de zeventiende eeuw staat vol scènes waar voedsel (kazen, haringen, citroenen, kreeften enz.), overvloedig gerangschikt op weelderige tafels, de aandacht trekt. Maar wat onthullen deze zorgvuldig getoonde gerechten echt? Achter hun verleidelijke verschijning schuilt vaak een dubbele taal: Enerzijds een morele boodschap over de ijdelheid van aardse genoegens, en anderzijds een erotische en seksuele symboliek die goed geïnformeerde kijkers van die tijd zonder problemen wisten hoe ze konden ontcijferen.
