The work depicts a couple, Manuel and Rosa, cradled in the misery of the arid lands of Sertão. Wishing to emancipate himself from their oppressive situation, Manuel tries to sell two cows to his owner, who, taking advantage of the omnipotence of his condition, uses constraints submitted to the dominated peasant, leading him to close the transaction by murder. Forced to flee, Manuel hopes to find refuge and consolation in the fanatical speeches of the enlightened Sebastião, promising an island, a land of paradise where justice would reign when «earth and sea will come together». But the infanticide perpetrated on an infant, a terrible and wildly religious act, under the gaze of Rosa will lead her to stab the preacher, preceding the illustrious mercenary Antônio das Mortes hired by the Church...

L’œuvre met en scène un couple, Manuel et Rosa, bercés dans la misère des terres arides du Sertão. Désirant s’émanciper de leur situation accablante, Manuel tente de revendre deux vaches à son propriétaire, qui, profitant de la toute-puissance de sa condition, use de contraintes soumises au paysan dominé, le conduisant à clôturer la transaction par le meurtre. Astreint à la fuite, Manuel espère trouver refuge et consolation dans les discours fanatiques de l’illuminé Sebastião, promettant une île, terre de paradis où règnerait justice lorsque « la terre et la mer se réuniront ». Mais l’infanticide perpétré sur un nourrisson, acte terrible et follement religieux, sous le regard de Rosa conduira celle-ci à poignarder le prédicateur, précédant l’illustre mercenaire Antônio das Mortes engagé par l’Église…

Het werk toont een paar, Manuel en Rosa, verhuld in de ellende van de dorre landen van Sertão. Manuel wil zich bevrijden van hun onderdrukkende situatie en probeert twee koeien te verkopen aan zijn eigenaar, die, gebruikmakend van de almacht van zijn aandoening, beperkingen hanteert die aan de gedomineerde boer worden opgelegd, waardoor hij de transactie sluit door moord. Gedwongen te vluchten, hoopt Manuel een toevluchtsoord en troost te vinden in de fanatieke toespraken van de verlichte Sebastião, die een eiland belooft, een land van het paradijs waar gerechtigheid zou heersen wanneer «aarde en zee samenkomen». Maar de kindermoord op een kind, een verschrikkelijke en zeer religieuze daad, onder de blik van Rosa zal haar ertoe brengen de prediker neer te steken, voorafgaand aan de illustere huurling Antônio das Mortes, ingehuurd door de kerk...
