Considered one of the founding fathers of the European Community, Jean Monnet lived in this house from 1945 until his death in 1979\. It was there that he and his collaborators, in the last days of April 1950, drafted the major principles that would serve as a cornerstone of European construction: the historic declaration that Robert Schuman was to address to Europe on 9 May, proposing the creation of the ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community) and thus laying the foundations for the European Community. In this house with a green and warm setting, the greatest men of the twentieth century came to visit him. Throughout his life he fought against divisions to create union, prosperity and peace among the peoples of Europe. His thatched-roof home is a symbolic witness to a man’s destiny and the success of an idea: Europe.
