The current Place de la République is the heart of the Neustadt district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The nerve centre of the former German quarter following the Annexation of 1871, Place de la République offers an exceptional insight into German architecture at the time.

The place(square) of the Republic, old(former) Kaiserplatz, establishes(constitutes) the centre of Neustadt. This monumental place(square) had authority to be the new political and administrative centre of the city, by concentrating numerous official buildings. It is also the point of convergence of the big(great) axes which structure urban extension.
