La carrière de Normandoux
Route de Saint-Julien-l'Ars, 86800 Tercé
Quarries operated for more than a century and a half, from about 1836 until 1996\. The people working there were often carrier from father to son.
The stone extracted at Chauvigny, Jardres, Lavoux, Tercé is a limestone formed during the secondary era during the Middle Jurassic, that is to say about 165 million years ago. A stone renowned in architecture for centuries and whose exploitation has known an important economic boom, since 1867, thanks to the Haussmannian works in Paris. From 1885 to 1939, Normandoux even owned his own railway line linking the quarry to Jardres station. This semi-hard, oolithic stone is used for elevation work, for the construction of cornices, bands, balconies, paving and stairs, for the cladding of facades, for the making of sculptures… These stones were used for the construction of important buildings such as Le Quai d'Orsay or Château de Chambord.
