Melun, city of 41,500 inhabitants in the Melun-Val-de-Seine agglomeration, is the prefecture of the department. From Roman times, Melun is located at the convergence of river and terrestrial axes. The Capetians established in the eleventh century the royal castle which was, until the Renaissance, a stay much appreciated by the kings of France. Five monasteries settled in the city from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. Melun’s economic role in supplying Paris with flour increased from the Middle Ages to the modern era, as did his administrative role. The Paris-Lyon-Marseille railway line was traced in 1847, industries were established (Brasserie Gruber, Coopération pharmaceutique) in 1910, and the École Nationale de Gendarmerie was established in Melun in 1945\. Over the years, Melun has welcomed illustrious figures, Abélard, Jacques Amyot, Louis Pasteur, Paul Cézanne...
