On the occasion of the 25th edition, Villeneuve d'Ascq proposes meetings, interventions and exchanges on November 30 at 11 am at the Nelson-Mandela House of Human Rights.

Operation Villeneuve d'Ascq – City against the death penalty celebrates its 25th edition, confirming the constant commitment of the City in favor of human rights, defense of the right to life and respect for fundamental freedoms.
For this edition, and at the suggestion of Amnesty International, a particular focus is given to the situation in Iran, where the resurgence of executions raises strong international concern.
Why a focus on Iran?
In Iran, the increase in executions, often carried out under conditions that call into question the right to a fair trial, calls into question the right to life and the principle of non-discrimination.
The death penalty is also used in a political framework: repression of dissent, minorities or social movements, further undermining the rule of law.
For many international observers, the situation in Iran is a key indicator of the level of freedom of expression, protection of minorities and the functioning of the judicial system.
The diplomatic consequences are also strong, complicating international relations and trust in human rights commitments.
This lighting aims to raise public awareness, inform and remind the need for continuous citizen mobilization.

À l’occasion de la 25ᵉ édition, Villeneuve d’Ascq propose rencontres, interventions et temps d’échanges le 30 novembre à 11h à la Maison des Droits de l’Homme Nelson-Mandela.

L’opération Villeneuve d’Ascq – Ville contre la peine de mort célèbre sa 25ᵉ édition, confirmant l’engagement constant de la Ville en faveur des droits humains, de la défense du droit à la vie et du respect des libertés fondamentales.
Pour cette édition, et sur proposition d’Amnesty International, un éclairage particulier est porté sur la situation en Iran, où la recrudescence des exécutions soulève une forte préoccupation internationale.
Pourquoi un focus sur l’Iran ?
En Iran, la multiplication des exécutions, souvent prononcées dans des conditions qui interrogent le droit à un procès équitable, remet en cause le droit à la vie et le principe de non-discrimination.
La peine capitale y est également utilisée dans un cadre politique : répression de la dissidence, des minorités ou des mouvements sociaux, fragilisant davantage l’État de droit.
Pour de nombreux observateurs internationaux, la situation iranienne constitue un indicateur essentiel du niveau de liberté d’expression, de la protection des minorités et du fonctionnement du système judiciaire.
Les conséquences diplomatiques sont également fortes, compliquant les relations internationales et la confiance envers les engagements liés aux droits humains.
Cet éclairage vise à sensibiliser le public, à informer et à rappeler la nécessité d’une mobilisation citoyenne continue.

Ter gelegenheid van de 25ste editie stelt Villeneuve d'Ascq vergaderingen, interventies en uitwisselingen voor op 30 november om 11 uur in het Nelson-Mandela Huis voor de mensenrechten.

Operatie Villeneuve d'Ascq – Stad tegen de doodstraf viert haar 25ste editie, waarmee de constante inzet van de stad voor mensenrechten, verdediging van het recht op leven en respect voor fundamentele vrijheden wordt bevestigd.
Voor deze editie, en op voorstel van Amnesty International, wordt bijzondere aandacht besteed aan de situatie in Iran, waar de heropleving van executies grote internationale bezorgdheid oproept.
Waarom een focus op Iran?
In Iran wordt door de toename van het aantal executies, die vaak plaatsvindt onder omstandigheden die het recht op een eerlijk proces in twijfel trekken, het recht op leven en het non-discriminatiebeginsel in twijfel getrokken.
De doodstraf wordt ook gebruikt in een politiek kader: Onderdrukking van afwijkende meningen, minderheden of sociale bewegingen, waardoor de rechtsstaat verder wordt ondermijnd.
Voor veel internationale waarnemers is de situatie in Iran een belangrijke indicator voor de vrijheid van meningsuiting, de bescherming van minderheden en de werking van het rechtsstelsel.
De diplomatieke gevolgen zijn ook sterk, wat de internationale betrekkingen bemoeilijkt en het vertrouwen in de verplichtingen op het gebied van de mensenrechten vergroot.
Deze verlichting is bedoeld om het publiek bewuster te maken, te informeren en eraan te herinneren dat de burgers voortdurend moeten worden gemobiliseerd.
