Soprano Asmik Grigorian, born in Vilnius to the Lithuanian soprano Irena Milkevičiūtė and the renown Armenian tenor Gegham Grigorian, was doing a great job adding roles to her repertoire, performing on increasingly prestigious stages (Theater an der Wien in 2014 in Tchaikovsky’s Enchantress, Berlin’s Komische Oper in 2016 in Onegin), even getting a break as Wozzeck’s Marie at Salzburg in 2017. And then… boom! When Romeo Castellucci turned the Salzburg Felsenreitschule into an abyss of stone and milk for Strauss’ Wildean/Biblical epos in 2019, her Salome catapulted her into the spotlight of opera stardom. In a role usually reserved for tungsten-plated dramatic sopranos, her voice displayed an edge of lyric steel that sliced right through the thrust of the Vienna Philharmonic. If Asmik Grigorian asks you for the head of Jokanaan, you’d better reach for the sword before this terrific and terrifying performer turns her sweet caressing voice into a lethal snarl. Asmik Grigorian’s exciting upcoming projects include a new production of Butterfly at the Vienna State Opera, of Rusalka under Ivor Bolton at Madrid’s Teatro Real Madrid and a muchanticipated debut at the Paris Opera in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades.
For her debut appearance in Geneva, the drama will be less palpable, but an evening in the company of Asmik Grigorian’s familiars Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff promises nonetheless a very exciting first meeting with this extraordinary vocal artist on her cultural home turf.

La soprano Asmik Grigorian, née à Vilnius de mère lituanienne – la chanteuse Irena Milkevičiūtė – et de père arménien – le célèbre ténor Gegham Grigorian – faisait bien son travail, construisait son répertoire, se produisait sur des scènes de plus en plus prestigieuses (Theater an der Wien en 2014 dans L’Enchanteresse de Tchaïkovski, Onéguine au Komische Oper de Berlin en 2016), obtenait même une percée à Salzbourg dans Wozzeck en 2017… Et puis boum ! Sa Salomé à Salzbourg en 2019, où Romeo Castellucci fit un abîme de pierre et de lait de la Felsenreitschule, la catapulte au firmament de la gloire lyrique. Dans un rôle habituellement réservé à des sopranos dramatiques bardées de tungstène, sa voix fut une lame d’acier lyrique tranchant droit dans le mur de son du Philharmonique de Vienne. Si Asmik Grigorian vous demande la tête de Iokanaan, vous feriez mieux de saisir l’épée avant que cette interprète terrifiante de talent ne transforme la caresse de sa voix en un sifflement meurtrier. Parmi les projets très attendus d’Asmik Grigorian : Butterfly à l’Opéra d’État de Vienne, une nouvelle production de Rusalka sous la direction d’Ivor Bolton au Teatro Real de Madrid et des débuts parisiens dans La Dame de pique de Tchaïkovski.
Pour sa première apparition à Genève, le drame sera moins palpable, mais une soirée avec Asmik Grigorian et ses familiers Tchaïkovski et Rachmaninov promet néanmoins une première rencontre fascinante sur le terroir culturel de cette extraordinaire artiste.
