The exhibition explores the manifestations of anxiety within interior spaces. This oppressive emotion, which is often diffuse, can suddenly intrude into both the domestic and professional spheres. It arises when the tensions of the outside world cross our thresholds, disturbing the sense of security we usually associate with our home. Eco-anxiety, in particular, unfolds with a sometimes destabilising intensity, as if organic elements of unknown strangeness were creeping into our bedrooms and occupying our sleepless nights.
We spontaneously associate the domestic space with a place of calm, protected from external threats. The workspace, on the other hand, is generally perceived as a structured, rational environment geared towards productivity. In this exhibition, artists Sarah Watson and Nadia Merzoug turn these simple assumptions on their head: in their work, the interior becomes a place of anxiety, rendered strange.
As an extension of their respective worlds, Sarah Watson and Nadia Merzoug are creating an immersive installation for this exhibition in collaboration with cabinetmaker David Marmilloud (Manivelle Ebénisterie). Together, they have designed a space that embodies the psychological and physical tensions of contemporary working environments.
Taken in the form of two open-plan offices, this installation evokes narrow workstations, devoid of comfort and customisation. Visitors are invited to move around in a deliberately constrained space, where the lack of privacy and spatial pressure are reminiscent of the impersonal world of modern offices.
