This musical is based on the correspondence exchanged between Albert Schweitzer—a 1952 Nobel Peace Prize winner for his humanitarian work—and Hélène Bresslau, between 1902 and 1912. During these ten years, their correspondence evolved from friendship to love and accompanied the birth of a shared project: to travel to Africa to build a hospital and provide healthcare. This correspondence, embodied by two actors, dialogues with the romantic music of Schubert and the spiritual music of Bach. Performed by four singers and an accordionist, these two musical worlds highlight the doubts and tensions that plague the engaged couple, between the impulses of the heart and the universal ideal.
