At the end of the 19th century, wax casting made a comeback in medical science, particularly in dermatology clinics. Several European institutions began building collections. The French school distinguished itself by the size of its collection and by the dedicated space it managed to build at the Saint-Louis Hospital, earning the admiration of rival schools. While we see these casts as objects of knowledge from the past, primarily intended for teaching purposes, they did not serve this role alone in their day. This lecture will be an opportunity to revisit the scientific, aesthetic, and political motives that may have driven the production and collection of these dermatological waxes.
Dr. Sophie Delpeux is a senior lecturer in art history at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. She specializes in the history of the representation of the body, both in art and in science. Her latest book, published by Presses Universitaires de France in 2025, is entitled Soigner l'image. Destin des beaux cas de dermatologie de l'hôpital Saint-Louis (Caring for the image: The fate of beautiful dermatology cases at Saint-Louis Hospital). Sophie Delpeux is familiar with Geneva, having collaborated on a research project focusing in particular on the collection of casts at the Museum of the History of Science.
