Il museo è installato dal 1903 in un castello, edificio medievale maggiore, costruito da Gauthier I di Vilebéon (1125 - 1205), grande ciambellano dei re Luigi VII e Filippo Augusto, nella seconda metà del XII secolo come residenza e luogo forte dei signori di Nemours. Poi il castello diventa ducale nel XV secolo. Infine l'edificio è rifatto nei secoli XVII e XVIII. Allo stato attuale delle conoscenze, il castello è considerato il più antico castello-fortezza di città in Ile-de-France.
